Google PageRank Decrease Example - Reciprocal Link

As we saw in previous example that Outbound links will decrease PageRank (PR). Therefore always ask for Reciprocal Links. This example shows how a Reciprocal Link will also leak PageRank and cause PageRank decrease or drop in a web site.

Let's get started!

Linking Structures of Web Pages
We will also use the final PageRank result of Example 1 to do the illustration. The final PageRank result of Example 1 is shown as below:

PageRank Decrease Calculation Example

PageRank Numbers of All Pages at the Beginning:
Fill in the PageRank numbers of all pages in a table as shown below:

  1
Home 1.92
Page 1 0.69
Page 2 0.69
Page 3 0.69
Total PR:
4.00
PR Loss:
0

Scenerio:
You visited a web site. You like the contents very much. Therefore you ask for a reciprocal link exchange with the web site. The link page of the web site has a PageRank value of 4 (Real PageRank) with 100 outbound links. Let's see what happens to your PageRank after reciprocal linking with the web site.

The new linking structure of your web site has become:

Reciprocal Link

Okay now, let's calculate the new PageRank values of all web pages in your web site. As before it starts with the home page.

Start PageRank Calculation from Home Page:
Same as the first example, let's start with the home page.

Fill in the PageRank result in the table:

  1 2
Home 1.92 1.94
Page 1 0.69
Page 2 0.69
Page 3 0.69
Total PR:
4.00
PR Loss:
0

Calculate New PageRank Number of Page 1:
As you noticed that Page 1 has only Backlink from Homepage. The calculation is shown as below:

PageRank Calculation

Again, fill in the new PageRank number of Page 1 in the table as shown below:

  1 2
Home 1.92 1.94
Page 1 0.69 0.56
Page 2 0.69
Page 3 0.69
Total PR:
4.00
PR Loss:
0

Calculate New PageRank Number for Page 2 and Page 3:
Obviously, the new PageRank of Page 2 and Page 3 are same as Page 1. Therefore the results after the first round of calculation will become:

  1 2
Home 1.92 1.94
Page 1 0.69 0.56
Page 2 0.69 0.56
Page 3 0.69 0.56
Total PR:
4.00 3.62
PR Loss:
0 0.38

Repeat Doing PageRank Calculation.....
Now repeat doing the PageRank calculations using the same method as before and you will get the following results:

  1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Home 1.92 1.94 1.61 1.62 1.44 1.44 1.35
Page 1 0.69 0.56 0.56 0.49 0.49 0.46 0.46
Page 2 0.69 0.56 0.56 0.49 0.49 0.46 0.46
Page 3 0.69 0.56 0.56 0.49 0.49 0.46 0.46
Total PR:
4.00 3.62 3.30 3.09 2.92 2.81 2.72
PR Loss:
0 0.38 0.70 0.91 1.08 1.19 1.28

  8 9 10 11 12 13 14

Page 3 0.44 0.44 0.43 0.43 0.42 0.42 0.42

Results of PageRank Decrease or Drop Example:

The PageRank numbers of all pages go to stable only after 18 round of repeat doing calculations. The results are shown in the following diagram:

PageRank Calculation Result

Conclusion of PageRank Decrease Example:

Although the PageRank of the link page of your link partner is 4, higher than your link page (1.92), the PageRank of your Home Page cannot be increased. Actually, the PageRank of your Home Page is decreased.

PageRank Decrease Analysis Report:

You decrease or loss a PageRank value of 3.04 of your web site by reciprocal link to an outsite web page! Of course, this can increase the link popularity of your web site if the link is relevant. You have to strike the balance between PageRank and Link Popularity.

Original PR PR after Reciprocal PR Loss
Home Page 1.92 1.24 0.68
Page 1 0.69 0.41 0.28
Page 2 0.69 0.41 0.28
Page 3 0.69 0.41 0.28
Total PR 4.00 2.48 1.52
Total PR Loss per Web Site: 3.04

Tips:

  • Always ensure quality reciprocal link. Even reciprocal link can leak PageRank if not link properly.
  • Always add more pages to increase the total PageRank of your web site after reciprocal links with some partners. This may compensate the PageRank leak.
  • Always consider the quantity of Outbound Links of the link page of your link partner. The more Outbound Links the link page of your link partner, the less PageRank value will be passed to your web pages. There is almost nothing if the link page has over 100 outbound links even the link page has a higher PageRank value.

This page demonstrate how Google PageRank decrease or PageRank drop by reciprocal link to other website.
