Google PageRank Evolution

Page ranking of a page may consider as the status or importance of a page in the world wide web. Let's explain in more details. The basic concept of Page ranking is: there should be a page or pages that must be more importance than the others with the same topic in the world wide web. Therefore pages with most importance in the world wide web must be ranked or searched first.

Let's take the pages of a website (Web Site 1) as an example:

Google PageRank Explain

If the web pages of Web Site 1 do not link together, all the pages can be treated as equal importance. Imagine that if you are the visitor, there is no any indication which page is more important to be read.

Note: This is just an example only. A web page with at least one incoming link and one outgoing link will only be indexed by Google.

Imagine that the following document links have been established in Web Site 1.

Google PageRank Explain

From the linking structure of document, it can be interpreted as:

  • After visiting Page 1, there is no indication to ask you to visit Page 2 and Page 3
  • After visiting Page 2, please also visit Page 1 and Page 3
  • After visiting Page 3, please also visit Page 1

Google PageRank Explained Conclusion

Page 1 is the most importance because:
  • Page 2 ask the visitor to visit Page 1
  • Page 3 also ask the visitor to visit Page 1
Page 3 is the second importance because:
  • Page 2 ask the visitor to visit Page 3
Page 2 is the less importance page because:
  • Page 1 and Page 3 do not ask the visitor to visit Page 2

We may then say that the PageRank of Page 1 is higher than Page 3. And the PageRank of Page 3 is higher than Page 2. Actually PageRank is a numeric value. Google has a PageRank algorithm to calculate the PageRank of web pages. The higher the PageRank, the more importance is the web page.

PageRank Concept and Terms

  • When Page 2 link to Page 1, it means that Page 2 cast a VOTE to Page 1. In other words Google interprets a link from page 2 to page 1 as a VOTE, by page 2, for page 1.
  • The quality of the page that cast the vote is also important. In other words, not all votes will be counted.
  • The more important the page that cast the vote, the more important the page that receive the vote will become.

Since the World Wide Wed has millions of pages, there must be a formula to measure the PageRank of each page. Please read on.....
